Is music a luxury or consolation in the times of chaos? Having endured the harrowing experience at the internment camp during the Japanese occupation, a Jewish gentleman got over the trauma of war and strived to provide entertainment and joy to the people of Hong Kong after the war. He dedicated himself to movie distribution and introduced classical music to Hong Kong. Despite the prohibitive cost, he established the Empire Theatre at North Point which would transform into the local pivot of classical music in 1950s. He was Harry Odell. Inspired by a 1956 interview on Wah Kiu Yat Po (華僑日報), “Empire Theatre and I: A Music Monologue” presents the intervening parallel of reality and the imagined voice of Odell. The audience may take glimpse of how classical music bloomed and converged into the local culture in the war-ridden city. With reference to the original musician line-up of the State Theatre, the artists illustrate in their performance how classical music soothed the pain of war at North Point where classical music once flourished. In the performance, the artists enact the moments when internationally-renowned musicians performed at North Point, and narrate the story of how immigrants and locals from all walks of life reinvigorated the cultural fragrance of Hong Kong.
